Day 2 Amboseli

– Breakfast

– Before the main heat of the day, go on a safari in the park which is famous for its high concentration of elephant. They appear most often in troops lead by an old female. You will have the best chances of spotting them at watering holes.

– Discover the Amboseli National Park. Located about 250 km from Nairobi and along the Tanzanian border, the park derives its name from the Masai word “Empusel”, meaning salty, dusty place. Declared a national park in 1974 to protect its unique and fragile ecosystem, the Amboseli National Park offers landscapes of remarkable contrasts: arid zones alongside the lush oases of the swamps. The ecosystem of this low rainfall region depends on water from Mount Kilimanjaro (5895 m). A particular feature of Amboseli is the possibility to take picture postcard photos of elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Covering an area of 392 km2 the park is, in addition to elephants, home to numerous animals (giraffe, wildebeest, antelope, buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena …) as well as 400 species of birds (pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hamerkop and 47 types of raptor) who live alongside the Masai villages.

– Lunch: Sentrim Amboseli

– Guided afternoon game drive through the Amboseli National Park. This compact park is abundant with wildlife and allows for excellent game viewing. Its vegetation consists of a combination of sprawling grasslands, swampy springs and dry dusty earth. Amboseli is most famous for its large elephant populations, with the bulls having some of the biggest tusks in the world. From Observation Hill you will have a view of the entire park and especially the swamp areas where buffalo, elephants, hippos and a diversity of water birds come to cool off and refresh themselves. Look out for the shy porcupine who only dares to emerge at sunset.

– Dinner: Sentrim Amboseli

– Amboseli National Park entrance fee (valid for 24 hours) included.

– Night at the Camp: Sentrim Amboseli (Standard Tent – Full Board)

Day 3 Amboseli – Tsavo East

– Breakfast

– Drive from Amboseli to Tsavo East. Travelling first in a south-easterly direction the route passes to the north of Mount Kilimanjaro before branching north to Emali. From there the main Nairobi-Mombasa road leads southeast to the Tsavo East National Park, entering at Voi Gate. Approximate journey time 4,5 hours. Route details and journey times may vary depending on road conditions.

– Picnic lunch

– Discover the Tsavo East National Park. Part of Tsavo National Park (the largest park in Kenya [20,812 km2] and one of the largest in Africa), Tsavo East is separated from the western part of the park by the railway linking Nairobi to Mombasa. No fence separates the two parks at present, allowing animals to move freely from one place to another. Equidistant from Nairobi and Mombasa, Tsavo East (11,747 km2) is the largest of the two Tsavo parks. Its dry and flat landscapes, excepting the Yatta Plateau (one of the longest lava flows in the world, after the Ol Donyo Sabuk volcano), showcase a rich wildlife. Grant’s gazelle, zebra, impala, Coke’s hartebeest, giraffe and lion are easily observable. Elephant and buffalo are common and often in large herds of several hundred animals.

– Sink into the shimmer of red, dusty plains on an afternoon game drive in the Tsavo East National Park. This sprawling and striking national park is renowned for its defining physical features that include the Mudanda Rock and the Yatta Plateau as well as the large herds of elephant that roam its mostly arid plains. In the glow of the late afternoon you will be struck by the gorgeous silhouettes of baobab trees that glisten against the sandy plains as the quiet stillness of the landscape lulls you into a sense of peace. Animals to look out for at this time of day include the short-maned Tsavo lion, cheetah and some of the more rare northern species of wildlife such as the speedy Somali ostrich and the odd-looking long-necked gerenuk. Your safari ends at nightfall with the possibility of seeing a predator take down its kill.

– Dinner: Sentrim Tsavo East

– Tsavo East National Park entrance fee (valid for 24 hours) included.

– Night at the Camp: Sentrim Tsavo East (Tent – Full Board)

Day 4 Tsavo East – Tiwi Beach

– Breakfast

– Safari in your minibus. Before the main heat of the day, the animals are still alert and this is the best moment to photograph them in action.

– Drive from Tsavo East to Mombasa. The main Nairobi-Mombasa road runs between Tsavo East and Tsavo West and is joined typically at either Voi or Manyani. From here the road leads southeast through the Taru Desert, an arid, scorched wilderness. Thereafter the scenery becomes progressively more tropical, the heat and humidity increases, and the landscape changes to coconut palms, papaya and other coastal vegetation. Approximate journey time 4 hours. Route details and journey times may vary depending on road conditions.
